The Importance of Pet Spaying & Neutering

The Reasons to Spay or Neuter Your Pet

If you have recently brought home a new pet and want to make sure they will be happy, healthy, and friendly with you, having them spayed or neutered is the best thing you can possibly do. Spaying is the removal of a female pet’s ovaries and uterus, while pet neutering is the removal of the testicles from a male pet. Why is this necessary for a new pet? The main reason is to help prevent aggressive behaviors in pets and to help them resist the urge to escape your home in search for other pets.

Here are some of the main reasons why pet neutering and spaying are beneficial for you and your furry friend:

Spaying and Neutering Ensures Good Health

It may not sound like removing reproductive organs is essential for ensuring a healthy cat or dog, but the facts are that it is a proven way to keep pets healthy. Spaying your female cat or dog will ensure they will not go through a dangerous pregnancy. It also eliminates the possibility of uterine cancer and greatly reduces the chances for breast cancer. Likewise, neutering a male cat or dog prevents testicular cancer and ensures a healthy prostate.

Cats and Dogs on Their Best Behavior

A pet that isn’t spayed or neutered will eventually go into heat and seek a partner from the opposite sex. This may cause them to become aggressive with other cats or dogs. They may also have problems at home when they can’t leave to find a partner. This may result in a female who is howling all the time or a male who is trying to escape or is peeing all over the house to mark his territory.

It’s Good for the Animal Community

There is nothing beneficial about overpopulation in the animal community. Without spaying and neutering pets, it could lead to an increase in puppies and kittens being born without a home to go to. Animal shelters are already dealing with an overcrowding issue. Many will have to be euthanized. Others will end up strays on the street, which causes trouble for other wildlife in nature and creates dangerous situations with people and cars.

Save Money

Owning pets is already expensive enough. Puppies and kittens being born can cause incredible strain on your wallet. There’s also the expensive cost of cancer treatment to worry about if your dog or cat gets sick with a condition that could have been prevented by spaying or neutering.
